Happy Festivus!

Happy Festivus!

A Happy Festivus and Merry New Year to All! I am inclined to agree with Nina in that I really don’t enjoy the way Christmas is celebrated. It’s too expensive and kind of silly and pointless in this consumer driven society. So, I have begun instead to celebrate Festivus! The idea behind Festivus is that everyone is kind to each other… we all get along… people share what they have… and not just with their loved ones but, with complete strangers, as well. During Festivus, each of us is reminded to follow the Golden Rule… and at least ONE TIME during the Festivus… one should find a way to volunteer some of their time to help a stranger who is less fortunate than themself. Festivus is about bringing out all that is good and decent in humanity and I for one, would like to see Festivus EVERY day of the year. Let’s all begin TODAY… starting right now; I declare a permanent and continued state of Festivus… because we can’t afford to have Christmas every day… IT’S FESTIVUS FOR THE REST OF US!!!

“Happiness Comes in Many Forms”

43 X 43 inches

Mixed Media by Dan Fulwiler

This painting is not quite finished yet but I just had to show it, anyway… Here we see a smiling, happy couple… soo much in love… soo much into the moment of each other… they have become completely oblivious to the death and mayhem taking place in their own back yard. For me, specifically, the painting can depict any form of extreemism when you simply assign values to each of the elements… for example… the male could represent the typical, glutinous American consumer and the woman could then represent the disposable-cosumer-goods society we are all so in love with… meanwhile, the crashing planet in the background could be a metaphor for what the parasites called humans are doing to their Mother Earth and the little humans falling to their death could be representative of any of a number of stupid wars… or the dying peoples could just as easily represent the starving children living in the tent cities that have sprung-up as a result of the failing economy and the crashing planet could be the Earth intentionally “shaking-off” the parasites in order to save her own life while meanwhile the average person remains oblivious to the effect he or she is having on the whole of creation… and … well… you get the idea.

Happy Festivus, Everyone!

Hair Event for Charity!

Hair Event for Charity!

“Itallian Countryside mural”

9 feet high by 17 feet long

Painted in the wine cellar of a private residence in Mequon, Wisconsin.

Who want’s to cut their hair? In September, 2010; we will be hosting an event to benifit Locks of Love, an organization that provides hair for fiancially disadvantaged children who have lost their hair due to illness or injury. We are looking for volunteers to come and have their hair cut for this very worthy cause. I have been growing my hair for several years now and I hope to have a nice long braid to donate. The minimum length for donation is ten inches.

I have always worn my hair in a crew-cut and when I began to grow my hair for charity, no-one seemed to notice, much, until recently, when I stopped keeping it in a pony-tail and decided to let my freak-flag fly. Now, everyone who has known me for more than a few years is suprised at the change in my appearance. People who have only known me a short while will be suprised to see me cut it off.

At first, I started to grow my hair because it occurred to me that all my friends were going bald and my Creator had blessed me with a full head of thick, curly red hair. I knew it would drive them nuts and possibly even make them a little jealous.

I have always been some-what financially challened andun-able to give to charity. Then, one day it occurred to me; I could give my hair to some poor kid who has gone bald from Chemo or some terrible accident. I found a way to give-back to my community and it’s free to me… all I have to do is grow my hair!

So… we will have a proffessional hair technician on-site to assure the cuttings are done correctly and to avoid anyone coming out looking weird. Their eill be food and music and an art contest/show/auction with all the proceeds going to benefit Locks of Love.

The theme for the art contest is “Charity”

All media will be accepted and there will be no minimum or maximum size restrictions. Paintings, sculptures, poetry, music… any form of art will be welcomed. The entry fee is $25.00 per entry with prizes awarded by a jury of professional artists who will be judging the works:

1st place: $300.00

2nd place: $200.00

3rd place: $100.00

I am just beginning to put all this together and so I will post more details as they become available, like… the exact date of the party… who the judges will be… etc.

I am putting the word out early so all you artists out there can get started on your show-winning masterpieces!

Hell House Revisited

Hell House Revisited

“Hell House Re-Visited”

16 X 20 Mixed Media by: Dan Fulwiler

Ah yes… another view of Hell…

What we see here is one of the houses we used to live in. We had a two-story apartment that just happened to be above a tavern. When we looked at the place before moving-in, we asked the land-lady if the bar was very noisy. The landlady said, “Goodness gracoius no… this is an “old-man” bar that closes at like ten o’clock every night.” So, like a couple of gullible roobs, we rented the place. Only to find -out the juke box got turned on at ten o’clock every night. But that was not as bad as Wednesday night. Every Wednesday night, the landlady would have “Band Night” during which any hack could come up on stage and “jam” with the house band. WE won’t name the band because… how to put this delicately… they really sucked! But… even Wednesday “kareoke” night was not as bad as the drunks who would pee on our vegatable garden… or the drunks who would vomit on the hood of our cars… or even the loud, curse-filled knock-down drag-outs that would take place on a regular basis. We are talking about the type of bar that has been fined many times for after-hours parties and serving liquor to minors. Needless to say we left that “Hell” and opted for a different type of Hell. I would say that compared to the “hell” of living at Hell House Re-Visited… we have found ouselves a nice little slice of Purgatory… no Hell at all!! And that means it’s almost like Heaven! But I digress… I was describing the painting… both houses are dilapidated and in ill-repair… we see the woman, lurking in the field… watching… waiting… wondering if she should approach the man waiting by the running car. A running car… something un-heard of in Hell… could he be the one who is supposed to take her out of here?

White Death!

December 11, 2009 by Dan
White Death!

The White Death of 2009 is upon us! Fourteen inches of snow followed by wind-chill readings of TWENTY BELOW!!!  I started shoveling at 5:00 am and was finally finished at 10:00 am… my back is killing me.

So… tomorrow morning I will go hunt deer. I would like very much to put a big doe in my freezer.

Wish me luck!
